How to write an outstanding Statement of Purpose
Applications for undergrad and grad programs abroad are opening up now. If you are considering applying to a university program abroad, you will likely run into the requirement to write a statement of purpose for your international university application. What the heck even is a statement of purpose and how does it differ from a US college essay?
First off, don’t make the common mistake that many US students do and treat this like a US college essay. Undergrad and master’s programs abroad are looking for something really different. So, pay attention to these tips:
Do’s
Treat your statement of purpose like you would a cover letter for a job.
Be clear why you are a good fit for this particular program. You need to make a strong case for yourself, just like you would for a job, outlining your experiences and results in relationship to the program’s academic content.
Massively research the program, the courses and the faculty. What excites you about the program structure? How would this program help you to achieve your career goals?

(By the way, when you master this technique, you will be able use it for cover letters for your future career, too.)
Don’ts
Don’t talk about how unique you are and then delve deeply into your personal backstory.
Don’t discuss your broken arm from 2nd grade and how that made you the person that you are today.
Don’t discuss why you love the city/country. While sometimes this can be relevant, you don’t want to do this at the expense of explaining why you are a good fit for the academics of the program.
